Memorial Day Weekend: The Unofficial Start of Summer Fun
As Memorial Day weekend arrives, so does the unofficial start of summer — longer days, warmer weather, family gatherings, and plenty of opportunities to stay active and connected. Here in the Upstate of South Carolina, we’re fortunate to have incredible outdoor spaces, walking trails, parks, and family-friendly activities right in our own backyard.
At our gym, we’re proud to have a community that spans generations. Many of our members are active older adults who value health, mobility, and social connection, while others are young families looking for ways to keep their children engaged and active throughout the summer months. No matter your age or stage of life, summer offers something for everyone.
Summer Activities for Older Adults
Staying active during the summer doesn’t have to mean intense workouts or packed schedules. Small, enjoyable activities can provide tremendous physical and mental benefits.
Morning Walks and Nature Trails
Early mornings are ideal for walks before the heat sets in. The Upstate offers beautiful places to enjoy fresh air and gentle movement, including:
- The scenic trails around the Hartness community and gym area
- The popular Swamp Rabbit Trail
- Walking paths at Conestee Nature Preserve
- Downtown Greenville’s Falls Park and riverfront areas
Walking helps improve cardiovascular health, joint mobility, and mood while allowing you to enjoy the beauty of the season.
Water Aerobics, Swimming & Paddleboarding
Swimming is one of the best low-impact exercises for older adults. It’s gentle on the joints while improving strength, flexibility, and endurance. Many local community pools and recreation centers offer senior-friendly water fitness classes during the summer.
For those looking to enjoy the outdoors, the Upstate also offers beautiful nearby lakes including Lake Keowee and Lake Hartwell for swimming, boating, and relaxing summer afternoons.
Paddleboarding has also become a favorite local summer activity for both older adults and families. Calm mornings on the water provide a great low-impact core workout while offering a peaceful way to enjoy the outdoors.
Gardening and Farmers Markets
Gardening combines light physical activity with stress relief and time outdoors. Summer is also a wonderful time to visit local farmers markets for fresh produce and community connection.
The TD Saturday Market in downtown Greenville is a local favorite and a great weekend outing for all ages.
Outdoor Social Activities
Summer is a great time to reconnect with friends and neighbors. Consider:
- Outdoor yoga classes
- Pickleball or bocce ball
- Concerts at local parks
- Farmers markets
- Group walks with friends
- Outdoor dining in downtown Greenville
Social connection plays a major role in healthy aging, and summer naturally creates opportunities to stay engaged.
Summer Fun for Families with Kids
For parents, summer often means finding ways to keep children active, entertained, and away from screens. Fortunately, the Upstate is filled with family-friendly outdoor opportunities.
Bike Rides and Family Walks
The Swamp Rabbit Trail is perfect for family bike rides, stroller walks, and outdoor adventures. With plenty of stopping points for snacks, ice cream, and parks, it’s an easy way to spend an active afternoon together.
Hiking Adventures
The mountains and parks surrounding Greenville provide excellent beginner-friendly hiking opportunities for families and older adults alike.
Some local favorites include:
- Paris Mountain State Park
- Table Rock State Park
- Caesars Head State Park
- Jones Gap State Park
Many of these parks offer easier walking trails, picnic areas, waterfalls, and scenic overlooks that make for memorable summer outings.
Lake Days and Paddleboarding
A summer lake day is a classic Upstate tradition. Families can enjoy swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, and picnics at nearby lakes like Lake Keowee and Lake Hartwell.
Paddleboarding is especially popular because it’s fun for both adults and older kids while encouraging balance, coordination, and time outdoors.
Splash Pads and Water Fun
Kids love water activities during the South Carolina summer heat. Community splash pads, neighborhood pools, lake outings, and sprinkler games at home all encourage active play while helping families cool off.
Backyard Olympics
Create fun family competitions with relay races, obstacle courses, water balloon tosses, or hula hoop contests. Kids love the excitement, and parents get moving too.
Outdoor Parks and Playgrounds
The Upstate has many excellent parks for family outings, including:
- Unity Park
- Legacy Park
- Conestee Nature Preserve
These locations offer walking paths, playgrounds, picnic spots, and plenty of open space for kids to run and explore.
Don’t Forget the Importance of Recovery
With increased outdoor activity comes the need for hydration, stretching, and recovery. South Carolina summer heat can be demanding, especially for older adults and young children. Remember to:
- Drink plenty of water
- Wear sunscreen
- Exercise during cooler parts of the day
- Stretch before and after activities
- Listen to your body
